Selection of the right magnifier (magnification power) for your applications
A magnifying glass (enlarger, magnifying glass) uses a lens to create a larger virtual image of an object for the viewer.
Magnifying glasses are manufactured depending on the purpose.
- Magnifying glasses with a magnification of 2x to 3x are suitable for reading small writing.
- Magnifying glasses with a magnification power of 5x to 7x are suitable for everyday use.
- Very small details are best viewed with a magnification of 10 to 21 (watchmaker's loupe).
- Magnification powers from about 21 are usually realized with the help of a microscope.
The higher the magnifying power, the more complex the production of the glass becomes, since different optical deviations have to be compensated for.
However, higher magnification levels have the disadvantage of a smaller field of view and a shorter working distance. With a 10x magnifying glass, reading of
small font is difficult because you have to slide through the small picture field from letter to letter.
A magnifying glass is held with one hand as close as possible in front of the eye while adjusting the position of the viewed object with the other hand,
until the enlarged virtual image is seen clearly.
